The U.S.-led negotiations continue to work toward a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
President Donald Trump recently stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is holding up a peace deal with Russia. The U.S. president has met with both President Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.
President Trump said, referring to President Putin, “I think he’s ready to make a deal. I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal.”
Recent U.S.-led negotiations have focused on post-war security guarantees for Ukraine, to ensure that Russia will not invade again, and an effort has been made for Ukraine to give up the eastern Donbas region, an area fervently battled over by the two countries. President Zelensky has publicly stated that Ukraine will not give up territory to Russia, citing that such a move is not lawful under the country’s constitution.
When asked about land concessions, President Trump said, “I think the land — you’re talking about — some of that land has been taken. Some of that land is maybe up for grabs, but it may be taken over the next period of a number of months. And you’re better off making a deal now.”
